Admission

Applicants must be selected for admission by The Graduate School and the School of Nursing. Applications for spring admission must be submitted by October 1st, and by January 15th for fall admission. Students wishing to be considered for the University's Competitive Merit Fellowship program must apply by December 15th for fall admission. All required elements must be received before Committee review can begin. Applications deemed incomplete following initial processing will be rejected; late applications are not accepted.

Admission Criteria

• Graduation from an NLNAC or CCNE-accredited baccalaureate nursing program.
• Registered nurses with an associate's degree or diploma in nursing, or who have an earned bachelor's degree in a field other than nursing, may apply to the RN-MSN Program. These students complete three undergraduate nursing courses prior to beginning the Master's clinical course sequence. (see the RN-MSN site for details)
• Strong overall academic record with an average of "B" or better in nursing courses and during the four years of undergraduate work. For RN-MSN applicants, the GPA is calculated using the 51 course credits required for admission (see RN-MSN information).
• Competitive GRE scores. Applicants are more competitive when their combined verbal plus quantitative scores reach or exceed 1000. Applicants who feel their working knowledge of algebra, geometry and data analysis may be "rusty” are strongly encouraged to prepare thoroughly before sitting for this exam. Completion of a GRE Preparation Course may be helpful.
• Minimum of one year of clinical work experience as a Registered Nurse is required, preferably in the area of specialization.
  
• Introductory statistics course with a grade of C or better, completed in the past 10 years.
• Current unencumbered license as a registered nurse in the state in which the student will do clinical course work. Note: an "unencumbered license" means neither the license, the licensee's practice, nor the licensee is associated with any type of restriction, encumbrance, or probationary limitations imposed by the applicable Board of Nursing or any judicial entity.
• Academic (2) and employment (immediate supervisor) references supporting applicant readiness for graduate study.
• Cogently written professional statement (3-5 typed pages) addressing all elements requested by the Admissions Committee as detailed in the Master’s Application Instructions.
• Health assessment course, approved by the School. Please refer to the School of Nursing's Master's Application Instructions for details of this requirement.
